FCT Police Seize Over 30 Tinted Vehicles as Abuja Security Operation Expands

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has launched a major enforcement operation across Abuja.

The action comes as authorities intensify efforts to tackle rising security concerns linked to robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes within the nation’s capital. Several vehicles were impounded for operating with tinted glasses, covered number plates, and improper registration documents.

However, police authorities insist the exercise is aimed at improving public safety and denying criminals the tools often used to avoid detection.

The crackdown was officially announced by the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, during a briefing with journalists on Friday. According to him, the operation was approved by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security across Abuja.

Sanusi explained that intelligence reports have repeatedly linked tinted vehicles and concealed number plates to criminal activities.

He said: “The IG has given us the mandate to begin the enforcement of the ban on the use of tinted vehicles and other offences as earlier stated.”

The police chief further stated: “Intelligence reports at the disposal of the command indicate that many criminal elements deliberately use such vehicles to conceal their identities, evade detection, and frustrate law enforcement efforts. This poses a serious threat to public safety.”

Moreover, the commissioner stressed that law-abiding residents should not view the operation as harassment.

According to him, “This exercise is not intended in any way to inconvenience law-abiding citizens, but it is to deny criminals the cover they exploit to operate crimes against innocent citizens and the FCT residents at large.”

Meanwhile, more than 30 vehicles have already been impounded since the operation began.

Sanusi confirmed this development, saying: “As part of this ongoing enforcement, over 30 vehicles found to be operating with tinted glasses, covered or obscured number plates, and without proper registration have been impounded.”

In addition, owners of the affected vehicles could face legal action if found guilty of violating existing regulations.

He warned: “The owners and operators of these vehicles will be charged to court in accordance with the laws of the Federation and the FCT Road Transport Regulations Act, 2023.”

Furthermore, residents have been encouraged to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities, vehicles, and individuals.

Earlier enforcement plans were suspended nationwide following a court order issued in January 2026.

However, authorities in Abuja appear determined to push ahead with measures they believe will improve security.
