Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former APC governorship candidate Tonye Cole have both withdrew from the All Progressives Congress governorship primary ahead of the 2027 election.
While many party supporters expected a fierce contest, both politicians instead announced their withdrawal separately, citing peace, unity and party stability as major reasons behind the move.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara confirmed his withdrawal in a statement released on Wednesday night.
According to him, the decision followed wide consultations with family members, political associates and close allies.
“After deep reflection and extensive consultations with my family, friends and associates, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw from the APC gubernatorial primaries,” Fubara stated.
“I do so with a full heart and with a firm commitment to support whoever emerges as the candidate of our great party.”
Furthermore, the governor explained that leadership sometimes demands sacrifice for the greater good of society.
“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he added.
Meanwhile, Fubara dismissed suggestions that his withdrawal reflected weakness or political pressure.
“I stepped aside from participating in the upcoming Rivers State governorship election not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” he said.
The governor also addressed his recent silence during political developments within the state.
According to him, his quiet approach was intentional and strategic.
“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose,” Fubara stated.
In addition, he appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC leadership for their encouragement and support throughout the process.

Shortly after Fubara’s announcement, Tonye Cole also confirmed his withdrawal from the governorship race.
In a separate statement, Cole explained that consultations with party leaders and stakeholders influenced his decision.
“As a committed democrat and firm believer in the supremacy of strong institutions as the foundation for sustainable development, I have consistently advocated for dialogue, reconciliation and unity among stakeholders within the Rivers APC,” he stated.
Moreover, Cole said he chose party unity over personal ambition after extensive discussions with supporters and political allies.
“Accordingly, I formally announce my withdrawal from the race and pledge my full support and cooperation to whoever emerges as the party’s candidate,” he added.
The former APC governorship candidate described the move as an act of patriotism and commitment to the progress of Rivers State.
Cole also thanked youths, women groups, elders and party faithful who supported his ambition during the political process.
