POWA Market Rebuilt as Monday Okpebholo Disburses ₦200 Million to Fire Victims

The Edo State Government has disbursed N200 million to traders affected by the POWA Market fire in Ekpoma. Each shop owner received N8 million to help rebuild their businesses.

The announcement was made by Governor Monday Okpebholo on Tuesday. Moreover, the funds were confirmed to have been directly handed to the affected traders.

This development stands out in a country where disaster response is often delayed. However, in this case, action was taken faster than expected.

According to the governor, the intervention fulfilled an earlier promise made to victims of the fire. In addition, it was designed to reduce the hardship caused by the incident.

“A few days ago, I made a promise to the traders affected by the POWA Market fire in Ekpoma. Today, I have fulfilled that promise,” Okpebholo stated.

The Edo State market fire compensation has therefore become a major talking point.

Furthermore, the government did not stop at financial aid. The damaged market structure was also rebuilt within a short period.

Many traders had lost goods, equipment, and capital during the fire. Therefore, the financial support is expected to ease their return to daily operations.

In addition, the N8 million given to each trader is considered significant. It provides more than basic relief and allows for meaningful recovery.

“I understand the pain and disruption this incident caused, and this intervention is about restoring not just livelihoods, but hope and dignity,” the governor added.

Meanwhile, the impact of the fire had extended beyond physical damage. Several traders were left uncertain about their financial future.

However, this intervention appears to address both economic and emotional recovery. By combining rebuilding efforts with cash support, a broader solution has been created.

Moreover, access to insurance is still limited for most small traders.

Governor Okpebholo linked the intervention to his broader approach to governance. He emphasized the importance of standing with citizens during difficult times.

“This is what governance means to me, standing with our people and taking real action when it matters most,” he said.

The Ekpoma intervention may become a reference point for disaster management in Nigeria.
