Retired Police Halt Protest After IGP Disu Steps In on Pension Bill Crisis

Tension that had been building at the Force Headquarters in Abuja was eased after Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, stepped in to meet protesting retired officers over the delayed police pension bill.

The atmosphere, which had earlier been charged with chants, placards, and visible frustration, was gradually calmed after the intervention.

Retired officers, who had gathered in large numbers, were initially disappointed after arriving at the Force Headquarters and not meeting the IGP.

In addition, flags were raised and slogans echoed across the premises as the retired personnel demanded attention.

“Retired police officers at force headquarters to meet IGP Disu over delay in police pension bill assent,” one of the statements circulating among the protesters read.

However, the situation took a different turn when the IGP later got involved and requested a direct meeting with the aggrieved officers. L

The meeting ended with good reception from the retired policemen who even unanimously agreed to halt their campaign to face the villa tomorrow because the IGP requested them to allow him to escalate their request and grievances to the president himself and they obliged.

Following the meeting, it was confirmed that the planned escalation of the protest to the Presidential Villa had been suspended. Therefore, the retired officers agreed to give the IGP time to intervene at the highest level.
