Edo Police Sack Officers in Abduction Ring, Ogun Guards Arrested for Killing

A major police misconduct crackdown has unfolded in Edo State after several officers were dismissed over alleged involvement in abduction and extortion.

The action was confirmed by the Edo State Police Command, which revealed that the officers were part of a wider criminal network.

At the same time, a separate but equally disturbing incident was reported in Ogun State, where two security guards were arrested over the killing of a traveller.

According to a statement issued in Benin City by the command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, five serving officers were dismissed following investigations into the alleged crimes. In addition, others linked to the network were also arrested.

The suspects were said to be part of a 10-member syndicate that included police personnel, former officers, PoS operators, and transport workers. However, their activities reportedly went unnoticed for some time.

The group allegedly operated along the Teboga axis off Aduwawa in Benin City. There, unsuspecting individuals were reportedly stopped, abducted, and forced to transfer money.

Authorities disclosed that victims were extorted through PoS operators, making the operation appear coordinated and deliberate. Furthermore, police equipment was allegedly used to deceive victims.

Ikoedem explained that the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, ordered a discreet probe after receiving multiple complaints from residents. Therefore, intelligence-led operations were launched.

The investigation reportedly uncovered a structured criminal network. Moreover, it revealed how some officers abused their positions to commit crimes.

She noted that the actions of the suspects brought serious embarrassment to the force. In addition, it undermined public trust in law enforcement.

According to the statement, the officers involved have been dismissed from service. Meanwhile, arrangements are being made for their prosecution in court.

The command also urged victims to come forward with useful information. Furthermore, PoS operators were warned against aiding illegal financial transactions.

It was emphasized that anyone found complicit would face prosecution. Therefore, stricter monitoring of such activities is expected.

While the Edo case was unfolding, another tragic incident was reported in Ogun State. However, this case involved the death of a civilian under suspicious circumstances.

Police in Ogun confirmed the arrest of two security guards linked to the killing of a traveller identified as Promise. The incident occurred on April 10, 2026.

According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, officers acted on a tip-off before locating the victim. Unfortunately, the victim did not survive.

He stated that the victim reported being attacked after arriving late the previous night. However, he was confirmed dead upon arrival at a hospital.

The body has since been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu for autopsy. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing.

Babaseyi added that preliminary findings led to the arrest of the suspects. In addition, efforts are being made to apprehend others connected to the case.

The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, condemned the incident strongly. Therefore, assurances were given that justice would be served.

He reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for unlawful violence. Moreover, he stressed that all those involved would be held accountable.

These developments have sparked widespread reactions among the public.

However, the swift response by authorities has also been noted. It suggests that efforts are being made to restore discipline within the system.
