Natasha Akpoti Cleared as FG Withdraws Defamation Charges

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has reacted to the withdrawal of criminal defamation charges earlier filed against her by the Federal Government.

The development came on Wednesday, January 14, after the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory struck out the case in Abuja.

Speaking shortly after the ruling, the Kogi Central lawmaker described the decision as a strong validation of her stance. She said the outcome renewed her confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.

The case had attracted national attention, therefore making its sudden end a major talking point.

“Today’s outcome affirms my belief in the rule of law. I remain committed to serving my constituents and defending the democratic rights of all Nigerians,” Akpoti-Uduaghan said.

The charges were withdrawn following a notice of discontinuance filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

Earlier, the defamation case had been linked to comments allegedly made by the senator during a televised interview.

Presiding over the proceedings, Justice C. N. Oji acknowledged the notice of discontinuance and struck out the charges accordingly.

In his remarks, the judge stressed the importance of caution in the use of state power.

“The court hopes that this decision will pave the way for restraint, healing, and respect for the rule of law in our democratic process,” Justice Oji said.

Meanwhile, the senator expressed appreciation to her legal team for their diligence throughout the process.

She also thanked her constituents and supporters for standing by her during the legal battle. According to her, the show of support strengthened her resolve.

It has also reopened conversations on the balance between governance and civil liberties. Many believe the withdrawal reflects growing public sensitivity to such matters.

In addition, civil society groups have welcomed the decision, saying it reinforces democratic norms.

They argue that public officials should be open to scrutiny without fear of intimidation. Therefore, the case may serve as a reference point going forward.

Although the matter has now been laid to rest, its impact remains. The Natasha Akpoti defamation case continues to shape public debate on freedom of expression and the rule of law.
