Security and intelligence sources have raised concerns over a possible shift in terrorist movements toward parts of southern Nigeria following sustained military operations in the North.
According to multiple security officials, ongoing offensives in Zamfara and Sokoto states have forced some armed groups to abandon their former strongholds.
According to security sources, some of the suspected fighters are believed to be moving through forest routes stretching from Zamfara into Niger and Kogi states.
One senior security source said, “These terrorists started moving from Zamfara through forests and remote routes and may have ended up in states such as Imo and Abia. Some are even believed to be in Ogun State.”
However, the claims remain intelligence assessments and security concerns. No official announcement has confirmed the establishment of terrorist camps in the affected southern states.
Meanwhile, officials explained that the groups allegedly rely on interconnected forests, cattle routes, and river channels to avoid detection. These pathways are said to stretch across several states, making surveillance more difficult.
Furthermore, a retired Army General described Kogi State as an important transit point due to its strategic location.
“Kogi serves as a major intersection point. From there, they can connect to routes leading to the South-East, South-West and South-South through forests and river channels,” the retired officer stated.
In addition, an operative of the Department of State Services reportedly claimed that some criminal groups maintain operational bases around forest areas linking Kogi, Ekiti, Ondo, and Edo states. These locations are believed to provide access to deeper parts of southern Nigeria.
Security experts also identified dense forests around Owerre-Ezukala, Ogbunike, Awka, and Orlu as areas that could be exploited due to difficult terrain and limited accessibility.
The terrorist movement in Nigeria remains under close monitoring by security agencies. Increased patrols, intelligence gathering, and community cooperation are expected to play a major role in addressing emerging threats.
Meanwhile, residents across affected regions have been encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
