The beloved Nollywood figure, widely known for her role in Aki na Ukwa, was said to have passed away after a prolonged illness.
The news of Oby Kechere’s death was confirmed on Friday, May 1, 2026. It was announced through the official Instagram page of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN).
According to the statement, the actress reportedly died on Monday, April 27, 2026. However, details surrounding her illness were not fully disclosed at the time of the announcement.
Oby Kechere became a household name after her memorable role as Ms. Koi Koi in the popular comedy Aki na Ukwa. The film remains one of Nollywood’s most cherished productions.
Over the years, she contributed significantly to the growth of the Nigerian film industry. In addition, she worked both in front of and behind the camera as an actress and director.
