NAF Recovers Black Box, Human Remains From Ondo Crash Site

The Nigerian Air Force has recovered key evidence from the ATR-42 aircraft that crashed in Ondo State.

The recovered items include the cockpit voice recorder and human remains.

The aircraft went down in Igbokoda on October 5, 2026. Recovery teams are still searching the swamp for other wreckage and missing components.

The latest recovery could help investigators understand what happened before the fatal crash. However, technical examinations are still required before conclusions can be reached.

The NAF announced the development in a statement released on November 6. Its Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, provided details.

According to the statement, teams recovered the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). They also retrieved part of the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), commonly known as the black box.

Additional aircraft wreckage, engine parts and human remains were also found. However, the remaining portion of the recorder is yet to be recovered.

The Nigerian Air Force said recovery operations remain difficult because of the swamp terrain. Teams are continuing their search for outstanding aircraft components.

Ejodame said the investigation was being handled carefully. He added that the process would support complete findings based on available evidence.

The Ondo aircraft crash investigation is expected to involve technical examinations of the recovered materials. The CVR can provide recorded cockpit conversations, while the FDR stores flight information.

The aircraft crashed during a routine flight from Benin to Lagos on October 5. It was carrying five crew members and 20 passengers.
