A fresh controversy has emerged after Elon Musk publicly criticised South Africa’s government over conditions tied to deploying Starlink in the country.

The billionaire entrepreneur revealed that he was asked to give up a 30 percent stake in his company to operate locally.

Musk disclosed the situation in a strongly worded statement, reflecting both frustration and concern.

“In 2017, I provided financial support for your presidential campaign, driven by the hope that you would deliver sound and effective leadership for South Africa,” he said.

He continued by explaining his recent move to re-engage with the country’s economy through technology.

“In 2026, I have returned to South Africa with the intention of introducing Starlink’s advanced broadband infrastructure a company that I founded and developed, yet I am now being asked to relinquish a 30% stake in the enterprise.”

Musk did not hold back in his criticism. He suggested that such demands could discourage potential investors from entering the market.

“The greed demonstrated by some African leaders will not deter me from supporting the continent’s development,” he added.

However, reactions have been divided since the statement surfaced online.

“My resources remain available to those African nations that seek genuine, unbiased partnership and support,” he concluded.
