Midnight Horror in Sokoto: Police Foil Kidnap Attack, Gun Down Armed Bandit

A coordinated kidnapping attempt in Sokoto State was foiled after security operatives engaged armed bandits in a fierce midnight gun battle.

The Sokoto kidnapping attack began in the early hours of April 23, 2026, when suspected bandits stormed Illela Village and Kwargaba Hamlet.

Meanwhile, one of the attackers was killed during the exchange of gunfire, while others reportedly escaped into nearby forests with gunshot wounds.

According to a statement released by the police, the distress call was received at about 00:30 hours. Security personnel, who were already on alert, immediately mobilized to the affected areas. However, upon arrival, they were met with heavy gunfire from the attackers.

In response, the operatives engaged the bandits in a prolonged gun duel. The statement noted that the officers eventually overpowered the group. It was confirmed that one of the suspects, dressed in military uniform, was neutralized during the operation.

“Personnel who were already on high alert immediately mobilized to the scene alongside other tactical units,” the statement said.

Furthermore, it was revealed that the remaining attackers fled into the Gundumi Forest. Many of them were believed to have sustained gunshot injuries during the confrontation.

Tragically, the incident also resulted in the death of a local vigilante member. He was reportedly shot by the attackers before security forces arrived. His remains have since been recovered and handed over to his family.

Moreover, the police emphasized that efforts are being intensified to ensure the safety of residents. Tactical teams, in collaboration with local hunters and vigilantes, have continued to comb the surrounding forests.

The police further reassured residents that the situation is under control. “Security forces are combing Gundumi Forest and surrounding areas, and further updates will be provided as operations progress,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant. Authorities also encouraged residents to report any suspicious movement to the nearest security post.
