Residents of Lagos have finally received clarity over the explosion that sparked fear and speculation in Mushin, as police investigations revealed that the incident was not linked to terrorism, explosives or any criminal activity.
The Lagos State Police Command announced that a detailed investigation has concluded the incident was caused by a mechanical failure rather than an explosive device.
According to police authorities, technical experts examined the scene and found no evidence suggesting the use of bombs, improvised explosive devices or sabotage. Instead, investigators discovered that the incident resulted from the sudden failure of a pressurized mechanical component.
The update has brought relief to many residents who initially feared a possible security threat.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Lagos State Police Command said extensive forensic and technical examinations were carried out to determine the exact cause of the incident.
“The Command is pleased to inform the good people of Lagos State and Nigerians at large that the investigation has conclusively established that the incident was not caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), terrorist activity, sabotage, or any form of criminal use of explosives,” the statement read.

The police further disclosed that experts found no signs commonly associated with bomb attacks.
“Technical findings revealed no traces of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues, or blast characteristics ordinarily associated with explosive attacks,” the command stated.
According to investigators, the incident occurred after a critical mechanical component located outside the affected vehicle suddenly failed.
The resulting release of energy shattered the front passenger-side glass panels of the vehicle. Consequently, minor injuries were sustained by the occupant.
Authorities noted that the damage observed at the scene was consistent with a mechanical failure rather than a criminal act.
The Mechanical Explosion finding has significantly changed the public understanding of the event.
Meanwhile, security experts say the outcome demonstrates the importance of scientific investigations in emergency response cases.
The Lagos State Police Command also reassured residents that public safety remains a top priority. Furthermore, authorities pledged to continue responding swiftly to incidents capable of causing public concern.
