Ogun State has entered Nigeria’s oil-producing league in a development few residents expected just a few years ago, as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) officially commenced drilling operations at the Eba Oil Well in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
The milestone marks a major shift in the state’s economic journey and could open the door to fresh investments, new jobs and increased industrial activities.
Moreover, it positions Ogun among the growing number of states contributing directly to Nigeria’s crude oil output.
The announcement has generated excitement across the state, especially among residents and business stakeholders who believe the project could transform coastal communities and create long-term economic opportunities.
According to officials, drilling activities have already begun following approval from the Federal Government. Preparations are also being made for future commercial production as operations continue to advance.
The development represents one of the most significant economic projects in Ogun State in recent years.
Authorities said the project forms part of a broader national strategy aimed at increasing Nigeria’s crude oil production capacity.
In addition, the initiative is expected to strengthen the country’s energy sector while expanding exploration activities beyond traditional oil-producing regions.
Governor Dapo Abiodun welcomed the development and described it as a major breakthrough for the state.

According to him, the project supports the government’s vision of creating new sources of wealth and expanding economic opportunities for residents.
“This is a significant achievement,” Abiodun said, noting that the development aligns with efforts to broaden the state’s economic base and unlock fresh opportunities for citizens.
The governor expressed optimism that the project would contribute positively to local development. Meanwhile, government agencies are expected to work closely with stakeholders to ensure smooth operations.
In addition, local contractors and service providers could benefit from increased demand as operations expand.
Officials also emphasized that environmental protection will remain a priority throughout the drilling process. Therefore, measures are expected to be implemented to reduce environmental risks and protect surrounding communities.
Furthermore, authorities assured residents that security arrangements are being strengthened around the project area. This, they said, will help safeguard critical infrastructure while maintaining peace within host communities.
The Eba Oil Well project comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking new ways to boost production and improve energy security.
Meanwhile, residents have expressed hope that the project will lead to improved infrastructure, employment opportunities and increased economic activities across the region.
