Ghana is preparing for a major political change after the government approved plans that could extend the president’s time in office from four years to five years.
The proposal has also introduced a new minimum age requirement for anyone seeking the country’s highest office.
Attorney General and Minister for Justice Dominic Ayine announced that the government had accepted the recommendation in principle.
According to him, the proposal would allow elected leaders more time to carry out their policies before another election cycle begins.
Ayine explained that newly elected governments often spend their first months settling into office. Meanwhile, the final year of their tenure is usually dominated by election activities, leaving less time for governance.
In addition, the government approved changes to the minimum age for presidential candidates. Although the constitutional review committee recommended lowering the age from 40 to 30 years, the government instead proposed a new minimum age of 35 years.
Furthermore, Ghana plans to move presidential elections to the first week of November. The adjustment is expected to provide a longer transition period before the January 7 inauguration of a new administration.
The constitutional review committee was established by President John Dramani Mahama in 2025 to examine the country’s 1992 Constitution and recommend possible reforms.
Moreover, Ayine disclosed that another committee would be created to prepare two constitutional amendment bills. The drafting process is expected to be completed by October 2026.
For the amendment to succeed, at least 40 percent of registered voters must participate in the referendum. In addition, at least 75 percent of those who vote must support the proposal before it becomes law.
