The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, has taken a significant step toward sustainable energy by unveiling a solar-powered Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station.
The charging station, launched at the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) headquarters in Abuja, was developed in partnership with the Electric Motor Vehicle Company (EMVC).
This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to green energy and reducing carbon emissions.
Speaking at the launch, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, described the project as a major infrastructure milestone.
He emphasized that it reflects the government’s dedication to advancing technology in energy and transportation.

“I am proud to witness this bold stride toward cleaner mobility. It is a direct reflection of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Nigeria’s commitment to reducing dependence on fossil fuels, enhancing energy security, and promoting green innovations,” Nnaji stated.
He further called for the expansion of this initiative across the country, ensuring that electric mobility becomes a widespread reality.
According to him, the ministry remains committed to policies that attract investment and create sustainable employment in the green economy.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of ECN, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, highlighted that the project aligns with Nigeria’s clean energy policies and the global push toward net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
He noted that the charging station utilizes fast-charging technology, enabling an electric vehicle to be fully charged in just 30 minutes.

“It is a Skilowatt Solar-Powered facility with the capacity to run on both public grid power and Solar PV. It is designed with a 20-kilowatt Lithium Battery and BVA intelligent inverter, ensuring quick charging and maintainability,” Abdullahi explained.
He expressed gratitude to the ministry, technical partners, and the ECN staff for their support in bringing this innovative project to life.
Furthermore, the unveiling of the EV charging station marks a significant leap in Nigeria’s push for cleaner energy solutions.
However, with this initiative, Nigeria is positioning itself alongside global economies that are transitioning to electric mobility.
