Europe Must Rearm to Defend Democracy – Ursula von der Leyen

Europe must urgently rearm to safeguard democracy and security, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned.

She stressed that member states must be given the flexibility to significantly boost their defense budgets.

Von der Leyen made this statement on Sunday, March 2, after a crucial meeting in London focused on support for Ukraine.

Her call for increased military spending comes amid growing concerns over global security and Europe’s ability to stand firm against potential threats.

“After a long period of underinvestment, it is now of utmost importance to increase defence investment for a sustained period,” she stated.

For years, many European nations have maintained limited defense spending, prioritizing other sectors.

However, the recent shift in global power dynamics has reignited discussions about military readiness.

Von der Leyen’s remarks highlight the necessity for European nations to reclaim their security and assert their leadership.

According to her, “Member states need greater fiscal flexibility to enable a surge in defence spending.”

This implies that governments must allow room in their budgets to reinforce their military capabilities.
