Business owners across Edo State have been given a deadline to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras as the state government steps up efforts to tackle rising security concerns.

The new order, announced by the Edo State Security Squad, requires all businesses to install functional CCTV cameras at their premises on or before July 30, 2026.

Moreover, officials believe the move will strengthen investigations and help security agencies identify criminal suspects more quickly.

The directive comes as authorities intensify operations against cult-related violence, kidnapping, and other criminal activities across the state. Furthermore, security officials warned that anyone planning to disrupt public peace would face immediate legal action.

Speaking during a press briefing in Benin City on Monday, the spokesperson for the Edo State Security Squad, Noah Idemudia, explained that surveillance cameras have become an important tool in modern policing.

According to him, recorded footage often provides vital evidence that helps investigators solve difficult cases and identify suspects after crimes have been committed.

Encouraging business owners to cooperate, Idemudia said, “Business owners are encouraged to install effective, working cameras within their business premises. We appeal to the general public and the business community to comply for everyone’s safety.”

He further explained how the cameras could improve investigations by helping officers reconstruct incidents with greater accuracy.

“With your cameras, we can piece together certain things as professionals. Please comply with us to make Edo a safe place,” he added.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson also addressed reports of planned “7/7” celebrations allegedly linked to cult groups operating within the state.

He warned that security agencies had already begun taking preventive measures to stop any unlawful gatherings before they occur.

“We are already taking action. You cannot carry out such acts in Benin City. Even if you go outside Benin, you will still be apprehended. So there is no point,” Idemudia said.

He also issued a direct warning to individuals considering taking part in the planned activities.

“If you already have the intention of celebrating, please cancel it now, because when you are arrested, you will be prosecuted accordingly.”

In addition, the Edo State Security Squad announced plans to strengthen collaboration with traditional institutions by properly identifying recognised community leaders across the state.

According to the spokesperson, the profiling exercise will be carried out alongside the Oba of Benin Palace to ensure only legitimate leaders are officially recognised.

He cautioned individuals falsely presenting themselves as community leaders to immediately stop the practice or face legal consequences.

Furthermore, the security squad disclosed that two suspects were recently arrested in Auchi and Uromi over alleged cult-related offences and unlawful possession of firearms.

Authorities said the suspects are expected to be arraigned before the state’s mobile court, which was established to speed up the prosecution of suspected cultists and kidnappers.

Residents and business owners have therefore been encouraged to comply before the deadline.
