A discovery deep inside a forest in Cross River State has left residents searching for answers after police arrested a man accused of being behind several mysterious disappearances.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Akaniyene Eretus, was arrested during a coordinated security operation in Odukpani Local Government Area.
The arrest came after intelligence reports allegedly led operatives to a secluded hideout hidden within a forest community.
Security personnel allegedly uncovered several shallow graves during a search of the compound, raising concerns about missing persons cases reported over the years.
According to the Cross River State Police Command, the suspect was traced to a hut he allegedly built in the Abanyama area of Ukim Ita Community in Creek Town. The operation was carried out by a joint team comprising police tactical units, Nigerian Army personnel, community youths, and traditional leaders.

However, authorities said the operation almost took a dramatic turn when the suspect allegedly attempted to escape after sighting security operatives.
Police claimed he also tried to retrieve a weapon before he was quickly subdued and taken into custody.
Furthermore, investigators conducted a detailed search of the compound. During the exercise, about eight shallow graves were reportedly discovered within the area.
According to security sources, remains found at the site were said to be headless. In addition, plantain crops had allegedly been planted over some of the graves in what investigators believe may have been an attempt to hide evidence.
Police further alleged that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to involvement in the deaths of about 30 individuals who had previously been reported missing within the community.
Moreover, investigators said he reportedly led security personnel to locations where additional bodies were exhumed. However, authorities stressed that several aspects of the confession are still being verified as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the latest incident linked to the case reportedly occurred on May 26, 2026.
Investigators disclosed that a 35-year-old woman identified as Uduak Essien was also arrested in connection with the matter.
According to police findings, the suspect allegedly claimed the woman assisted him by luring victims to the location. However, security agencies noted that efforts remain ongoing to establish the accuracy of those claims.
The case reportedly came to light after residents heard screams during the most recent incident. Consequently, concerned community members alerted local leaders, who immediately contacted security authorities.
The information reportedly triggered a swift response that eventually led to the operation and subsequent arrests.
Furthermore, authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their work.
