The Awolowo family has mourned the death of Afenifere leader Chief Reuben Fasoranti, describing him as one of the last great figures of Awolowo’s political tradition.
Fasoranti died at the age of 100, leaving behind a legacy of public service and commitment to the Yoruba people.
His death has drawn tributes from the Awolowo family and African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN) Plc, publishers of the Tribune titles.
Ambassador Dr Ọlatokunbọ Awolowo Dosumu, chairman of ANN Plc and head of the Awolowo family, said the elder statesman’s passing marked the end of a remarkable chapter in Nigeria’s political history.
In a statement dated October 20, 2026, Dosumu described Fasoranti as a strong defender of the political beliefs and values of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
He said the late Afenifere leader belonged to a generation of politicians who stood firmly by their beliefs despite changes in the political climate.
According to Dosumu, Fasoranti spent his life promoting justice, fairness, progressive leadership and the welfare of the people.

He also noted that Fasoranti played an important role in preserving Afenifere’s founding principles and traditions.
His wisdom, experience and guidance, he added, would be deeply missed.
“For the Awolowo family, and indeed for all who cherish the ideals for which Chief Awolowo stood, this is a particularly poignant loss,” he said.
“We mourn not merely the passing of a distinguished elder statesman, but the departure of a faithful custodian of a precious political heritage.”
Dosumu extended the condolences of the Awolowo family and ANN Plc to the Fasoranti family, Afenifere leaders and members, and others who worked with the deceased.
He also thanked God for the late statesman’s long life, describing his commitment to his principles as an example for future generations.
“The last of the titans has taken his leave. An era has truly ended,” Dosumu said.
He also prayed for the peaceful repose of Fasoranti’s soul.
