Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has urged police commissioners across Nigeria to build stronger relationships with the people they serve.
Disu delivered the message during a virtual meeting with Commissioners of Police nationwide.
He stressed that effective policing requires public trust, clear communication and a better understanding of local communities.
The police chief also called for stronger teamwork, accountability and coordination among senior officers.
His message focused on making policing more people-centred and improving public safety.

During the meeting, Disu reminded commissioners that their leadership should go beyond enforcing the law.
He urged them to stay close to residents and understand the concerns affecting their communities.
He said: “As a commissioner in your area of jurisdiction, get closer to the people. Policing is not gra-gra; it is about the contact between you and the people you are policing, and the understanding between you and the people.”
The statement highlights the importance of building trust between police officers and the public.
It also encourages commissioners to maintain open communication with residents rather than rely only on force.
The Nigeria Police Force emphasised a shared mission through its message: “ONE FORCE. ONE VISION. A SAFER NIGERIA!”
The virtual meeting also aimed to improve coordination among police commands across the country while, Disu encouraged officers to align their strategies and take responsibility for their actions.
