The Nigeria Police Force is taking steps to ensure peaceful elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to a safe and inclusive electoral process.
Disu gave the assurance during a meeting with a United Nations delegation at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The delegation was led by Leonardo Santos Simão, the UN Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel.
The meeting focused on police preparations for the 2027 elections. Both sides discussed ways to prevent violence and protect voters throughout the electoral process.
Simão said the visit provided an opportunity to review election security plans. He also highlighted growing security concerns across West Africa and the Sahel.
The UN representative stressed the need to stop political disagreements from turning into violence. He noted that public confidence in the police would remain important during the elections.

He also sought updates on lessons learned from previous elections. These lessons could help strengthen security arrangements ahead of the 2027 polls.
Another major issue raised during the meeting was the protection of vulnerable voters. Simão specifically highlighted the need to protect internally displaced persons during elections.
The discussion also brought attention to the importance of police impartiality. Voters must be able to participate without fear, intimidation or unfair treatment.
The 2027 election security discussion reflects growing attention to the role of security agencies in protecting Nigeria’s democratic process.
