Ebola in Nigeria: Recovery Signs Emerge as Authorities Continue Contact Tracing

Nigeria’s confirmed Ebola patient is showing signs of recovery, according to the Federal Ministry of Health.

The government says there is currently no evidence that the virus has spread within the community.

The update comes amid continued monitoring and efforts to prevent further infections. Health officials are tracing contacts, maintaining quarantine measures and preparing medical facilities to respond to possible risks.

In a statement shared on X on Friday, the ministry urged Nigerians to follow official health guidance and avoid spreading unverified information.

“The Federal Government has provided an update on the confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria, reporting that the patient is showing signs of recovery. There is currently no evidence of community spread,”the statement reads.

The ministry said contact tracing, quarantine and patient monitoring remain ongoing. Authorities are also coordinating the national response and strengthening preparations across health facilities.

“Contact tracing, quarantine and monitoring continue, alongside strengthened national coordination, health facility preparedness and public health measures.

Nigerians are encouraged to follow recommended precautions, rely on information from recognised health authorities and avoid sharing unverified reports.”

The announcement followed an earlier report from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).

The agency said the patient had developed multiple organ failure after contracting the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola.

Nigeria confirmed the infection on October 20 after laboratory tests detected the virus. The woman had reportedly received treatment at a private hospital in Abuja.

The case also prompted questions about the patient’s nationality and recent travel.

Ugandan authorities initially described her as Nigerian, while Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya said she was born in Uganda.

Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs later identified her as the Ugandan-born wife of a Swiss diplomat based in Abuja.

It said she was believed to have contracted the virus during a trip to Uganda.

Her husband, who reportedly travelled with her, was placed in isolation but had no symptoms at the time of the report.

Authorities are investigating how the infection occurred.

The government has urged the public to rely on recognised health agencies for accurate updates.

People should avoid circulating unconfirmed claims that could cause unnecessary fear.

Although the patient is reportedly improving, monitoring and public health measures remain important.
