A viral shooting video has triggered a police investigation in Calabar, Cross River State.
Police have now arrested a 24-year-old student linked to the incident.
The footage allegedly showed suspected cult members firing shots from a moving vehicle.
The incident reportedly happened in the early hours of September 17.
The Cross River State Police Command launched an operation after the video spread online.
Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, announced the arrest in a statement.
He said Commissioner of Police Ajo Ordue ordered the immediate identification of those involved.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations led the response.
Operatives from the Violence Crime Response Unit also joined the operation.
The team began an intelligence-led operation at about 11:30 p.m. on September 17.
Police tracked the vehicle seen in the viral footage.
The operation led to the arrest of its driver.
Police later traced another suspect to a hotel in Calabar.
The suspect was subsequently arrested at the location. Eitokpah identified him as a student of the University of Cross River.
He allegedly told investigators that he was a leader of the Vikings Confraternity.
Police said he also admitted appearing in the viral footage.
The suspect allegedly admitted being the person seen firing the shots.
According to the police, he linked the incident to a sign-out activity.
Eitokpah quoted the suspect as explaining that another alleged member gave him the pistol.
“The operation led to the identification and tracking of the vehicle captured in the viral footage, and resulted in the arrest of its driver.
“Information obtained during the operation assisted the police in tracing a key suspect to a hotel in Calabar, where he was arrested.”
The police said investigations are still ongoing.
Officers are working to identify and arrest other people connected to the incident.
They are also investigating how the firearm was obtained and how the vehicle was used.
The Cross River police arrest followed concerns over gunshots allegedly fired in a public area.
Commissioner Ordue ordered a professional and detailed investigation into the case. He directed investigators to ensure anyone involved or assisting the alleged act faces justice.
The police chief also warned against the illegal use of firearms in public places.
He described such actions as a serious security threat to residents.
The command urged residents to report suspicious movements and illegal firearms.
Residents were also encouraged to report cult-related activities to security authorities.
