The Federal Government has introduced a new security team to protect the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway from threats and damage.
The initiative began with 40 officers deployed to monitor activities along the major coastal road.
Works Minister David Umahi launched the Coastal Highway Guards on Sunday as part of efforts to protect the project.
The guards will work with security agencies while maintaining a visible presence along the highway.
Their duties include reporting suspicious movements and alerting authorities to cases of vandalism.
They will also help stop activities that could affect the safe use of the road.
These activities include hawking, loitering and the use of Okadas and Keke on the highway.
Retired General Adekunle Shodunke will lead the team during its operations.
The guards will coordinate with relevant security agencies to strengthen monitoring across the highway.
Umahi said the scheme was created to protect national infrastructure rather than serve as an empowerment programme.
He described the appointments as full-time jobs focused on securing important government assets.
The minister said the move supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He added that the Federal Government remains committed to protecting major infrastructure projects across Nigeria.
The highway stretches through several coastal states and is expected to improve movement across the region.
It is also expected to support trade, tourism and other economic activities along Nigeria’s coastline.
