Tinubu Unveils AI Plan to Strengthen Nigeria’s Fight Against Insecurity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unveiled a new strategy that places artificial intelligence at the centre of Nigeria’s efforts to tackle insecurity.

The announcement signals a major shift in how the country plans to respond to modern security threats and strengthen the Nigerian Army for future challenges.

The security strategy was revealed during the grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 in Port Harcourt. Moreover, the President said his administration is committed to equipping the Armed Forces with advanced technology to improve intelligence gathering, combat readiness, and overall operational efficiency.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu explained that the government is preparing the military to confront increasingly complex security threats. He stressed that innovation, technology, and local manufacturing will play a vital role in protecting lives and securing the nation.

According to the President, the military must continue adapting to the changing nature of warfare.

He noted that artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies will help improve military operations across different battlefields.

“My administration is firmly committed to countering contemporary threats through the adoption of emerging technologies and the building of capacity across all battle spaces, thereby improving operational planning and combat readiness.”

The announcement comes as Nigeria continues to battle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security challenges affecting different parts of the country.

However, Tinubu believes technology will provide stronger tools for the Armed Forces to respond more effectively.

Furthermore, the President said efforts are already underway to strengthen research, innovation, and local defence production.

He explained that the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) remains central to that vision.

According to him, revitalising DICON will reduce dependence on imported military equipment.

It will also encourage local production of advanced combat tools needed by the Nigerian military.

“This administration is committed to modernising our Army to enhance its capacity to meet contemporary security challenges,” Tinubu said.

He expressed confidence that strategic partnerships would help improve local manufacturing of high-end military equipment.

Moreover, such partnerships are expected to boost operational effectiveness across the Armed Forces.

In addition, it will strengthen counter-terrorism efforts and enhance cybersecurity resilience.

Tinubu also said member countries would work together to:

“explore the opportunities that artificial intelligence presents for national security.”

Therefore, Nigeria’s decision to invest in AI reflects a growing global trend among countries modernising their defence systems.

Meanwhile, the President praised the commitment and sacrifices of officers and soldiers serving across the country.

He reminded military personnel that professionalism must always go hand in hand with respect for citizens.

According to him, protecting vulnerable people remains one of the military’s greatest responsibilities.

He urged soldiers to maintain discipline while carrying out their constitutional duties.

“Serve the people with the same devotion you bring to defending them, for the uniform commands respect only when it protects the weak and upholds the dignity of every citizen.”

The message received applause during the Nigerian Army Day Celebration, which brought together senior military officers, government officials, and security stakeholders.

Furthermore, the event highlighted the Nigerian Army’s ongoing efforts to improve operational readiness and adapt to emerging security realities.
