A dramatic prison van escape has sparked an urgent police operation in London after a Nigerian inmate reportedly fled custody in broad daylight.
The incident has drawn widespread attention, with officers now working around the clock to locate the escaped inmate.
Authorities identified the escapee as 25-year-old Temitope Segun. He reportedly escaped from a prison transport van on Monday evening, prompting an immediate manhunt across several parts of London.
According to the Metropolitan Police, Segun was last seen on Woolwich High Street at approximately 6:40 p.m. Consequently, officers quickly launched a large-scale search operation in the surrounding area.
Footage circulating on social media appeared to show the moments following the escape. Several police vehicles were seen surrounding a prison van near the now-closed Waterfront Leisure Centre.
The incident has raised questions about prison transport security. However, police have remained focused on locating the suspect as quickly as possible.
Officials said Segun has known connections to several areas in south London. These include Woolwich, Plumstead, and Abbey Wood.
As a result, additional resources have been deployed to those locations. Furthermore, detectives have released a photograph of the suspect to assist the public.
Leading the investigation, Detective Sergeant Claudine Manning said officers are working continuously to locate the escaped inmate.

She stated:
“My team of dedicated officers are working around the clock to trace and apprehend Temitope Segun. It is imperative that the public contact police via 999 if they see him, or know where he may be.”
Moreover, Manning provided details about the suspect’s appearance at the time of the escape.
According to police, Segun was last seen wearing a black jacket, black trousers, and black trainers.
Meanwhile, authorities have stressed that public safety remains a top concern. Therefore, residents have been advised not to confront or approach the suspect under any circumstances.
Instead, anyone with information has been urged to contact emergency services immediately.
Police said members of the public should call 999 and quote reference number 2270/10JUN if they have any information that could assist the investigation.
Furthermore, law enforcement agencies often move quickly to establish the suspect’s known contacts, travel routes, and possible hiding places.
At present, detectives continue to carry out inquiries across south London. Search efforts are also being supported by intelligence gathering and public information.
