Nigeria’s tech space has been thrown into the spotlight after a viral job vacancy claim triggered a heated reaction online.
The debate gained attention after reports suggested that over 500 roles remained unfilled due to skill gaps. Moreover, the claim was linked to Moniepoint CEO, Tosin Eniolorunda, and quickly spread online.
However, Phyna pushed back against the narrative, questioning whether the issue goes beyond skills.
Reacting to the claim, she said:
“How much is the salary? Let’s assume it is ₦500,000 monthly, some people are on TikTok from morning till night and earn more than that daily. How much is rent, how much is cost of living in Nigeria? You cannot just say Nigerians are not smart because jobs are not being filled.”
Her comments were seen as a direct challenge to the idea that Nigerians lack the skills required for available roles.
Furthermore, Phyna highlighted how current conditions may influence career choices among young people.
She added:
“If Nigeria gets better, a lot of people will leave fooling and dust their certificates. I have my certificate here, I studied engineering. If Nigeria gets better, I will dust it and move into the corporate world.”
In addition, her statement reflects a growing frustration among graduates who feel disconnected from job opportunities.
Meanwhile, the tech and fintech sectors in Nigeria continue to face discussions around talent shortages.
Therefore, the situation has been described as complex, with both employers and job seekers facing challenges. The cost of housing, transportation, and daily needs has been rising steadily.
Moreover, digital platforms like TikTok have created alternative income streams for many youths. This shift has changed how people view traditional employment.
