A major shift in Nigeria’s policing and education system has been announced. A new police academy campus is set to rise in Ogun State.
President Bola Tinubu approved the establishment of the new campus in Erinja, Yewa South. In addition, a N15bn take-off grant has been allocated. The funding is intended to fast-track development and ensure quick operational readiness. It will cover key facilities and infrastructure.
“The intervention fund will be sourced from TETFund’s 2026 allocation and will finance priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets at the new campus,” the statement read.
Moreover, the decision followed consultations among top government officials. These included ministers, the Inspector General of Police, and education regulators.
The meeting reviewed several critical factors before the approval was granted. These included student capacity, funding, and training needs.
Furthermore, the expansion aligns with ongoing recruitment efforts within the police force. More officers are expected to be trained in the coming years.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Academy Ogun campus is the first under the 2021 Act. The law allows the academy to operate across multiple locations.

According to the Presidency, the move is strategic and long overdue. It is expected to improve training standards nationwide.
Tinubu believes the expansion will “strengthen institutional governance, modern policing education and national security.”
However, before this approval, the academy operated only one campus in Wudil, Kano State. This limited its capacity over the years. In addition, lawmakers had earlier pushed for decentralisation. They urged the government to establish campuses in all geopolitical zones.
Therefore, the Ogun campus is seen as a major step toward that goal. It may also reduce pressure on the existing facility. The academy itself has a long history. It began in 1988 with temporary sites in Kano and Kaduna.
Later, it was moved to Wudil in 1996. It was upgraded to a degree-awarding institution in 2012.
Moreover, it now offers programmes in law, sciences, and social disciplines. These courses support modern law enforcement needs.
Meanwhile, expectations are high for the new campus. Many believe it will boost local development in Ogun State.
