An overnight attack has left a Nigerian military base in Borno State in ruins. Several soldiers were killed after insurgents launched a coordinated assault on the facility.
The incident occurred late Wednesday in Benesheikh, located in Kaga Local Government Area. Reports indicate that heavily armed fighters stormed the Joint Task Force formation without warning.
According to sources, the attackers opened intense fire and used explosives during the raid. As a result, significant damage was recorded, and casualties were reported among troops.
“He was k+lled last night along with the Imam of the Brigade, many officers and soldiers. The att@ck lasted several hours. The camp is Benishek along Damaturu Road; it’s very unfortunate,” a source said.
Moreover, Brigadier-General O. Braimah was confirmed among those killed in the attack. His death has added to the shock within military circles.
Another source further confirmed the loss of senior leadership. “This is Brig. Gen. O.O. Braimah, 29 Brig Commander in Benishek, who was k+lled alongside other senior staff officers yesterday.”
Meanwhile, several bodies were recovered after the incident. However, the exact number of casualties has not yet been officially confirmed.
In addition, many soldiers were reported injured during the attack. Some of the wounded have been evacuated for urgent medical attention.
Furthermore, a number of personnel remain unaccounted for. Search operations have been ongoing to locate missing soldiers.
The attack is believed to have been carried out by militants linked to the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram.
However, the intensity of this assault has raised questions about evolving tactics.
Meanwhile, security forces are expected to review their strategy in response to the attack. Reinforcements may also be deployed to prevent further incidents.
