US–Venezuela Relations Shift as Sanctions on Rodríguez End

The United States has lifted sanctions on Venezuela’s new leader, Delcy Rodríguez, signaling a dramatic change in relations between both nations.  The move, announced on April 1, has raised global attention, especially given the recent political upheaval in Caracas.

Delcy Rodríguez, who assumed leadership after the removal of President Nicolás Maduro, has now been officially removed from the US Treasury sanctions list.

This decision is being viewed as a clear sign of recognition from Washington. Moreover, it reflects a broader attempt to rebuild strained ties between the two countries.

Rodríguez reacted swiftly to the development, expressing optimism about future cooperation. She stated, “We trust that this progress will allow for the lifting of the sanctions currently in force against our country, and make it possible to build and guarantee an effective binational cooperation agenda for the benefit of our peoples.”

The US lifts sanctions on Venezuela at a time when diplomatic engagement appears to be accelerating. Meanwhile, relations between Washington and Caracas have improved notably since Maduro’s removal earlier this year.

In addition, Rodríguez has reportedly worked closely with the administration of US President Donald Trump. This cooperation includes opening Venezuela’s energy sector to American investors.

Furthermore, the reopening of the US Embassy in Caracas after seven years highlights growing trust between the two governments.

Rodríguez previously served under Maduro and was sanctioned alongside key figures in his administration. Although she has dismissed some officials, such as Vladimir Padrino López, others like Diosdado Cabello remain influential and supportive.

The current leadership change followed a dramatic US military operation on January 3. During the operation, Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured in Caracas. They were subsequently taken to New York to face drug trafficking charges, which they have denied.

According to Venezuelan authorities, the operation resulted in about 100 deaths, raising concerns about its human cost.

The decision as the US lifts sanctions on Venezuela could mark the beginning of a new chapter in bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, Rodríguez faces the delicate task of balancing international expectations with domestic pressures.
