The Africa Cup of Nations is set for another expansion. The announcement has sparked excitement and questions across the continent.
The AFCON 28 teams expansion was confirmed by CAF President Patrice Motsepe after a key executive meeting. Motsepe revealed the decision on Sunday, shortly after CAF’s executive committee meeting concluded. However, details about the new format were not provided.
“This is about our commitment to world-class football, bringing together the best African players from across the globe to compete on the continent,” he stated.
Furthermore, the expansion is expected to create more opportunities for emerging football nations. While the decision has been welcomed in many quarters, some uncertainty remains. The structure of the expanded tournament has not yet been explained.
Moreover, it is unclear when the new format will be introduced. CAF is expected to provide further details in the coming months.

Meanwhile, the current format features 24 teams, which was introduced in 2019. That change had already expanded participation from the previous 16 teams. The AFCON 28 teams expansion highlights CAF’s ongoing efforts to grow the competition. Over the years, the tournament has evolved significantly.
In addition, more countries have been given the chance to compete at the highest level. Motsepe also confirmed upcoming tournament plans during the announcement. The 2027 edition will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Furthermore, another tournament is expected to take place in 2028. This is part of a plan to align AFCON with a four-year cycle.
Meanwhile, these changes are aimed at improving organisation and global appeal. CAF hopes the adjustments will strengthen the competition’s reputation.
