Atiku Demands Clarity on El-Rufai’s Whereabouts

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Federal Government to immediately clarify the status and health of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

The unexpected appeal has raised fresh political tension, as uncertainty continues to surround El-Rufai’s alleged detention.

The El-Rufai detention controversy has drawn attention after reports suggested he may be in custody. Therefore, Atiku said silence from authorities is fueling anxiety among family members and associates.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, February 24, Atiku expressed deep concern over what he described as troubling reports. He urged the government to clearly state which agency is holding the former governor.

According to him, Nigerians deserve transparency in such matters. He specifically asked whether the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, the State Security Service, or any other body is responsible.

Atiku stressed that secrecy around detentions weakens public confidence. Furthermore, he said any agency holding El-Rufai has a duty to protect his rights and dignity.

He maintained that access to medical care, family members, and legal counsel must be guaranteed under the Constitution. Meanwhile, reports alleging that El-Rufai suffered a nosebleed in custody have intensified concerns.

Claims that relatives were denied access were also described as disturbing. Atiku stated that such actions are unacceptable in a democratic society.

He warned that if authorities cannot ensure the former governor’s safety, bail should be granted without delay.

Beyond the immediate issue, Atiku raised broader concerns about fairness in anti-corruption efforts. He suggested there is a growing perception of selective prosecution.

According to him, opposition figures appear to face tougher scrutiny, while others are spared. However, he insisted that justice must be applied evenly.

“Justice must be transparent. Accountability must be even-handed. And the rule of law must apply to all — without fear or favour,” he said.
