Lagos Introduces UAV Drones to Strengthen Security Operations

Lagos State government has unveiled a bold new security strategy that will see surveillance drones deployed across the state.

The move is expected to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve rapid response to crime.

The announcement was made on Monday during a press briefing marking the first 100 days in office of Mr. Ayodele Ogunsan.

He serves as Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund.

The plan to introduce Lagos surveillance drones has drawn attention because of its scale and timing. Moreover, it signals a shift toward more technology-driven policing in Nigeria’s commercial hub.

Ogunsan explained that discussions are underway for a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigeria Police Airwing. The agreement will support coordinated air-based security operations.

According to him, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, also known as UAVs or drones, will be deployed to widen surveillance coverage. In addition, intelligence collection and inter-agency coordination are expected to improve significantly.

He noted that Lagos, as Nigeria’s economic center, requires modern security systems. Therefore, continuous investment in technology has been prioritised to safeguard lives and businesses.

Reviewing his first 100 days, Ogunsan said the Trust Fund had strengthened its financial base through targeted fundraising. Stakeholder engagement has also been expanded to boost support.

Meanwhile, 80 new patrol and operational vehicles have been deployed across the state. These vehicles were provided to enhance visibility and response time.

The Trust Fund also revealed that a private donor has committed to constructing a permanent office complex for the agency. Efforts are also being made to rehabilitate abandoned Armoured Personnel Carriers. Once restored, they will be returned to active service.

Looking ahead, statewide training programmes are planned for security personnel. The focus will be on professionalism, tactical skills and improved service delivery.

The introduction of Lagos surveillance drones is seen as part of a broader security reform effort.

“Through collaboration and innovation, we will continue to strengthen security and ensure a safer environment for all residents,” Ogunsan added.
