Another Truck Crash Reported on Otedola Bridge

A mid-day crash involving a mini truck loaded with tomatoes caused panic on Friday at the Otedola Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The incident, which happened around noon, again raised concerns about safety on one of Lagos’ most feared road corridors.

According to eyewitness accounts, the truck was said to have suffered “brake failure” before losing control on the bridge.

The vehicle reportedly veered off its lane and rammed into several cars, catching motorists off guard during a busy traffic period.

The sudden impact left a black SUV climbing onto another vehicle, with both cars sustaining visible damage.

However, no deaths were recorded in the crash, given the moderate traffic flow at the time.

Occupants of one affected vehicle, said to be a family, were reported to have escaped without injuries. Nevertheless, panic spread across the bridge as drivers struggled to navigate the wreckage.

Meanwhile, traffic movement was severely disrupted for several hours.

Emergency responders and concerned road users were seen working together to clear damaged vehicles from the road. As a result, long queues built up on both sides of the expressway.

The latest Otedola Bridge accident adds to a troubling history linked to the busy route. The bridge is widely described as one of Lagos’ most “dangerous traffic blackspots,” especially for crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles.

In June 2018, the bridge witnessed a deadly tanker explosion that killed at least 12 people. That incident destroyed dozens of vehicles and remains one of Lagos’ worst road disasters.

Moreover, similar accidents have continued over the years. In January 2025, a multiple-vehicle crash involving trucks reportedly left one person dead and three others injured. In April, a vehicle was said to have fallen off the bridge, seriously injuring the driver.

Further incidents were also recorded later in 2025. In December, two containerised trucks crashed, forcing authorities to temporarily shut the bridge.

In addition, residents continue to demand stricter enforcement of safety rules and better monitoring of truck movements.
