Newcastle Crush Benfica 3-0 as Mourinho Admits: “We Couldn’t Match Their Power”

Benfica manager Jose Mourinho conceded that his side was outplayed both physically and tactically after a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United in Tuesday night’s Champions League clash at St. James’ Park.

The match, which many expected to be closely contested, saw Newcastle dominate from the 20th minute onward after an early scare from Dodi Lukebakio, whose strike hit the post.

The hosts’ relentless energy and attacking width ultimately proved too much for Benfica’s defensive setup.

Anthony Gordon opened the scoring for Newcastle, finishing off a low cross from Jacob Murphy, who was instrumental down the right flank.

Harvey Barnes, coming off the bench, sealed the win with two well-taken second-half goals that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

“The difference was in the physical power,” Mourinho admitted after the match.

“We couldn’t compete with their horsepower.

In the first half, we were organised and created chances, but after conceding, our structure fell apart. Newcastle have four lightning-fast wingers, they just kept coming.”

He went on to highlight the turning point of the night.

“If we score first, the story changes. The second goal killed us mentally, and from there, it was one-way traffic.”

Meanwhile, Gordon continued his impressive form in Europe, becoming the first Newcastle player to score in three consecutive Champions League matches.

Speaking after the game, he said: “It means everything. We had so many chances, I’m glad one went in. Credit to Jacob [Murphy] for the assist.”

Newcastle vs Benfica Champions League fans were treated to a dynamic display of attacking football from the Magpies, with manager Eddie Howe full of praise for his front three.

“Anthony was outstanding, Jacob’s delivery was superb, and Harvey’s finishing was top-class,” Howe said. “It’ll give all three huge confidence.”

Furthermore, Howe credited his players’ resilience and high work rate, noting that maintaining intensity was key to breaking Benfica’s disciplined defense.

“We knew they’d sit compact, but once we got that first goal, the confidence flowed,” he added.
