World-renowned American judge Frank Caprio, often described as the “nicest judge in the world,” has passed away at the age of 88.
His death was confirmed by his family after a long fight with pancreatic cancer.
The Rhode Island-born judge became a global sensation through his viral courtroom clips, which showcased not only justice but also compassion and humour.
Millions across the world admired his ability to balance fairness with empathy, making him a rare figure in modern law.
In a heartbreaking twist, Judge Caprio had posted an emotional message on Instagram just hours before his death.

“Unfortunately, I’ve had a setback. I’m back in the hospital now and I’m coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more,” he wrote to his 3.4 million followers.
His family later announced his passing on the same platform, describing him as a man remembered for his “warmth” and “unwavering belief in the goodness of people.”
His son, David Caprio, thanked fans worldwide and urged them to “spread a little kindness” in honour of his father’s legacy.
Beloved for his courtroom show Caught in Providence, Caprio’s style won the hearts of millions.
The programme, which earned three Daytime Emmy nominations, showcased cases ranging from traffic tickets to neighbourly disputes.
What set him apart was his humanity. He often invited children to sit beside him on the bench, offered heartfelt advice, and left viewers inspired with hope.
The production company behind the show, Debmar-Mercury, also paid tribute to him.
Co-presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein said: “His unique brand of compassion and common sense approach will be deeply missed. We will miss him dearly.”

Beyond the show, Caprio’s influence grew through social media, where clips of his rulings attracted billions of views.
One TikTok video showing his morning routin brushing his teeth, signing his book, and rewatching his own show garnered over 5 million views.
Reflecting on his courtroom journey in 2019, Caprio said: “My proceedings show a slice of life of Rhode Island that is very interesting, and it reflects the same issues people are experiencing nationwide.”
Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2023, Judge Caprio told followers he was
“fully prepared to fight as hard as I can.”
Despite his battle, he continued to inspire others, always showing courage and gratitude.
Judge Frank Caprio is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Joyce Caprio, their five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
