Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Sues Senate President Godswill Akpabio for Defamation

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has taken legal action against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, alleging defamation over remarks made about her appearance and legislative duties.

The lawsuit, filed at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, states that a post shared on Facebook by a user with the handle “Patrick” insinuated that the senator prioritizes makeup and transparent outfits over her responsibilities as a lawmaker.

According to Senator Natasha’s legal team, these claims are false, defamatory, and damaging to her reputation.

Her legal representatives argue that such remarks undermine her credibility as a legislator, portraying her as unserious and incapable of performing her duties.

As a result, she is seeking a court declaration that the statement was defamatory, an injunction preventing further publications of such nature, and ₦100 billion in damages, along with an additional ₦300 million to cover litigation costs.

The lawsuit follows a heated incident in the Senate chamber.

Days earlier, a video surfaced online showing Senate President Godswill Akpabio ordering the removal of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Senate chamber.

This led to a confrontation, which resulted in her being referred to the Senate Disciplinary Committee for further action.

Her legal team insists that no public figure should be subjected to such derogatory statements, especially when they undermine their professional integrity.

They argue that this lawsuit serves as a warning that defaming individuals—regardless of their position—has legal consequences.

Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding the senator’s removal from the chamber has sparked debates over respect and decorum within the legislative body.

Senator Natasha’s lawsuit could set a precedent for addressing defamatory statements against public figures, ensuring that individuals in leadership positions are held accountable for their words.

Her demand for ₦100 billion in damages highlights the seriousness of the allegations and the impact the statements may have had on her public image.

The coming weeks will reveal how the court rules on the matter, and whether Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s case against Senate President Godswill Akpabio will redefine the boundaries of political discourse and accountability in Nigeria.
