The Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has confirmed that the fire explosion at its Buguma Wellhead 008 in Rivers State was caused by acts of vandalism.
According to NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, the incident involved pipeline vandals attempting to sabotage the facility and steal crude oil.
“This unfortunate act of sabotage, which also resulted in severe damage to the well’s back pressure valve, reflects a disturbing pattern of repeated attacks on wellheads in the zone,” Soneye stated.
He further disclosed that the vandals have resorted to using extreme measures, such as dynamite, to destroy installations and gain illegal access to hydrocarbons.
The explosion caused significant damage, adding to the ongoing financial strain on the nation’s economy due to crude oil theft.
NNPCL noted that theft on this asset has persisted since March 2023.
“The company is fully committed to tackling these fires and minimizing the financial losses caused by such criminal acts,” Soneye added.
Furthermore, the NNPCL assured the public of its collaboration with security agencies to combat vandalism.
It also pledged to support communities impacted by these incidents through relief efforts aimed at mitigating the effects of the destruction.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force has denied any involvement in the fire incident, reinforcing the need for urgent solutions to this growing crisis.
