Two lives were tragically lost on Wednesday following an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) near Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
The incident occurred at a 200-unit housing estate under construction in Dalwa, approximately 175 kilometers from Maiduguri, where reconstruction efforts are underway for communities devastated by Boko Haram insurgents.
The explosion, which happened around 1 PM, coincided with the commissioning of other housing estates in Maiduguri by Governor Babagana Zulum and Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni.
A source revealed that a similar blast occurred on Tuesday, though details remain unclear.
Governor Zulum’s initiative to rebuild Dalwa underscores the state’s commitment to aiding displaced communities, but incidents like this highlight the persistent insecurity in the region.
Meanwhile, in Zamfara State, reports indicate a worrying trend of explosive attacks in the Dansadau District of Maru Local Government Area.
More alarmingly, a bomb detonated on a bridge in Yar Tasha village on Wednesday, killing 12 people, and another explosion involving an 18-seater bus on Sunday resulted in the driver’s death.
These recurring incidents have heightened fears among locals, with residents suggesting that bandits are using explosives to instill fear and disrupt movement.
In addition, communities already grappling with insurgency and banditry, these violent incidents call for urgent intervention.
Addressing the insecurity in northern Nigeria requires strategic action to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety of residents in affected areas.
