Media personality Daddy Freeze has weighed into the growing debate surrounding comparisons between Nigerian music star Wizkid and late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
His comments come amid the ongoing clash between Wizkid and Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, which has continued to stir reactions across social media and the entertainment space.
At the heart of the controversy is the recurring argument by some fans who place Wizkid on the same pedestal as Fela.
However, Seun Kuti had openly challenged those comparisons, insisting that his father’s legacy goes far beyond music.
That intervention, meanwhile, sparked a sharp response from Wizkid, who reportedly dismissed Seun and claimed superiority over the late Afrobeat icon.
Reacting to the development, Daddy Freeze took a firm stance, arguing that Wizkid and Fela operated on entirely different planes of influence.
According to him, while Wizkid is a global music star, Fela’s impact was deeply rooted in activism, resistance, and personal sacrifice. Therefore, the comparison, he suggested, misses the bigger picture.
Daddy Freeze explained that Fela’s music could not be separated from his fight against political oppression.
Moreover, he stressed that Fela’s life was defined by constant clashes with authority, repeated arrests, and a willingness to suffer for the freedoms he believed in.
These actions, he noted, gave Fela a unique place in history that extended far beyond chart success.
In his words, Daddy Freeze said, “Until Wizkid is ready to stand up and carry stones to Government House, he shouldn’t compare himself to Fela.
Fela put his skin in the game. Fela wasn’t a troublemaker; he was a freedom fighter. agitation and music go and together, you can’t separate the two. Fela went to jail fighting for our right”.
Furthermore, Daddy Freeze maintained that Fela’s courage and activism were central to his legacy.
He argued that the Afrobeat pioneer used his art as a weapon against injustice, often at great personal cost.
Wizkid, however, has largely stayed away from open political confrontation, focusing instead on music and global branding.
Meanwhile, the debate has reopened broader conversations about celebrity influence, activism, and responsibility in Nigeria’s music industry.
While Wizkid remains one of Africa’s most successful artists, Daddy Freeze’s remarks suggest that greatness should not be measured by fame alone.
