The diagnosis has drawn concern from Catholics worldwide, with many praying for his recovery.

The Vatican reported that the surgery was successful and that no complications occurred.

Cardinal Baldassare Reina, the vicar of Rome, also called for prayers at the hospital before the surgery.

“Let us join together in prayer, asking the Lord to sustain our bishop, Pope Leo, and to comfort all those who are hospitalized here,” he said.

The Vatican later confirmed that the operation was completed “successfully, on schedule and as planned.” The Pope returned to his hospital room following the procedure.

Pope Leo is expected to remain in hospital for about a week, while his public engagements have been cancelled through October 20 as he recovers.

The diagnosis has also raised questions about his planned visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17.

The trip’s status may depend on his recovery and medical advice.

The Pope Leo XIV lung cancer diagnosis marks a major health development during his papacy.

Further medical updates are expected to clarify his recovery and any additional treatment.
