On the honours of the successful and spectacular works of Olatunji Disu, the commissioner of police(CP), Rivers State police command, he has been awarded as the CP of the year at the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) awards and commendation ceremony.
The ceremony was held on Monday, April 15, at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.Disu was nominated as the commissioner of police of the year alongside Danjuma Aboki, CP Imo command and CP Augustina Ogbodo, CP Ebonyi command.
The ceremony was to acknowledge and celebrate the bravery, dedication, integrity, and patriotism of officers and to motivate other officers to excel in their duties by following the example set by the awardees.
The vice-president Kashim Shettima; Godswill Akpabio, the senate president; Barau Jibrin, deputy senate president; Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano; Aminu Ado Bayero, Emir of Kano; and heads of security agencies were marked present during the ceremony.
During the ceremony, Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu, made a statement with the sayings that the federal government had approved the first week of April as police week and the last day of the week as the National Police Day.
“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, in our tradition of honouring the police force in the life of this great nation, we have approved the adoption of the first week of April as police week,” Shettima had said.
“Furthermore, the last day of the week, the April 7th, is hereby declared National Police Day in Nigeria,”he added.
Disu became famous for restructuring the Rapid Respond Squad (RRS) in Lagos, under the leadership of former governor Akiwunmi Ambode. He is also a strong proponent of policing with consent ideology.
He, however,became the CP of Rivers in November 2023, and within five months, he has recorded significant achievements in combating crime and maintaining peace.Notably, he led the neutralization of high-profile criminals like “2Baba,” responsible for the murder of SP Bako Angbashim, and “General Ugly,” a notorious cult leader.
Also, Disu was responsible for the elimination of “General Odiereke,” a notorious crime lord, after an eight-year manhunt. He also oversaw the neutralization of “John Togo,” a fearsome sea pirate responsible for terrorizing coastal communities.
Disu’s tenure also saw successful crackdowns on criminal syndicates, including a car-snatching ring, and the discovery and neutralization of wanted cult leaders and their lieutenants.
He has also introduced state-of-the-art technology, such as a fleet of drones, to enhance law enforcement operations, particularly in surveillance and rescue missions.
Posthumous awards were also given to some families of deceased police officers at the event.
