An explosion in the Idi-Araba area of Lagos State on Thursday claimed one life and left three others injured, prompting authorities to warn residents about the dangers of handling suspicious objects.
The incident occurred at a scrap metal yard on Taiwo Street, Mushin, where traders were working with a metallic object resembling an explosive device.
Reports indicate that the object detonated while being cut, leading to the fatality and multiple injuries.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, the explosion was reported around 1:30 p.m. following a distress call.
Officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit in Ikeja were deployed to the scene for assessment.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the blast was caused by military grenades that had been tampered with by a scavenger attempting to split one of them.
The explosion killed the scavenger instantly, while three others sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Law enforcement officials quickly secured the area, gathered evidence, and documented the scene for further analysis.
The deceased’s body was taken to a public morgue for an autopsy, while police investigations continue to determine the origin of the explosives and the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged residents and businesses, particularly in areas where scrap trading is common, to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects.
The Lagos State Police Command assured the public that efforts are ongoing to prevent similar incidents in the future.
