The Senate had suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan on allegations of “gross misconduct” following a heated exchange with Senate President Godswill Akpabio on February 20 over seating arrangements.

However, the situation escalated when she accused Akpabio of sexual harassment—an allegation he denied.

Following the controversy, Akpoti-Uduaghan petitioned the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions to address the matter.

However, the committee dismissed her petition on procedural grounds, further intensifying debates surrounding the issue.

The senator, however, did not remain silent about the decision.

In a social media post, she described her suspension as an attempt to suppress her voice, stating that it contradicts the principles of natural justice.

Akpoti-Uduaghan remained unwavering in her position, emphasizing that the suspension does not diminish her legitimacy as an elected representative of the people.

She boldly stated:

“Against the culture of silence, intimidation, and victim-shaming; my unjust suspension from the Nigerian Senate invalidates the principles of natural justice, fairness, and equity.”

Furthermore, she reassured her supporters that she would continue to fulfill her duties regardless of the Senate’s decision.

“The illegal suspension does not withdraw my legitimacy as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I will continue to use my duly elected position to serve my constituents and country to the best of my ability till 2027… and beyond.”

Despite her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s determination to serve Kogi Central remains unshaken.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the Senate will address the controversy.
