Retired Military Officers Protest Unpaid Entitlements at Finance Ministry in Abuja

Retired military personnel on Tuesday, January 7, staged a protest at the Ministry of Finance in Abuja, demanding the full payment of their unpaid entitlements.

The protesters blocked the entrance to the ministry, preventing staff from driving into the premises, and displayed banners listing their grievances.

They set up canopies and chairs, vowing to continue the demonstration until their demands were met.

The retirees are calling for the payment of their Security Debarment Allowance (SDA), palliatives covering October 2023 to November 2024, and refunds for pension deductions from the salaries of medically boarded soldiers.

Their banner highlighted three major demands: “1. 50% balance of our arrears,” “2. Bulk payment of S.D.A.,” and “3. Pay us our palliative.”

They emphasized that the government had previously promised to settle these obligations but has failed to deliver.

In December 2024, the federal government released 50% of the owed entitlements following similar protests.

However, the retirees argue that the remaining payments have not been fulfilled.

They are also seeking a 20% to 28% salary increment covering January to November 2024 and an additional N32,000 added to their pensions.

One of the protesters remarked, “We served this nation with dedication, and it’s only fair that our entitlements are paid without delay.”

The protest highlight rising frustration among retired military personnel who feel neglected after years of service.

The retirees are urging the government to honor its promises and restore their faith in the system.

Meanwhile, the protesters have vowed to maintain their position at the Ministry of Finance until their unpaid entitlements are fully addressed.

The demonstration also highlights broader concerns about the welfare of veterans and the government’s handling of pension reforms.

Analysts warn that failing to address the grievances of retired military officers could impact morale within the armed forces and erode public trust in government policies.

Protesters reiterated their willingness to continue pressing their demands, emphasizing that they will not relent until justice is served.
