A powerful earthquake struck Tibet on Tuesday, January 7, leaving at least 53 people dead and 62 injured, while many others remain trapped under collapsed buildings.

The 6.8-magnitude earthquake, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), hit Dingri County near the Nepal border at 9:05 AM local time.

The U.S. Geological Survey, however, reported the tremor as magnitude 7.1, highlighting its intensity.

Over 1,000 houses sustained severe damage, forcing rescue teams to act swiftly in their search and recovery efforts.

Videos aired by CCTV revealed massive destruction, with homes crumbling and walls collapsing.

Surveillance footage also captured panicked shoppers running for safety as shelves toppled and debris scattered.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “full-scale search and rescue efforts, minimizing casualties to the greatest extent possible, properly resettling affected residents, and ensuring their safety and warmth through the winter.”

The China Meteorological Administration warned that temperatures in Dingri could drop to minus 18 degrees Celsius, posing additional risks for survivors.

The powerful earthquake has also resulted in significant infrastructure damage, with debris blocking roads and emergency workers navigating hazardous conditions to reach affected areas.

Relief efforts have been ramped up, and disaster aid, including cotton tents, quilts, and high-altitude winter supplies, has been dispatched to assist displaced residents.

CCTV added that “local authorities are reaching out to various townships in the county to assess the impact of the quake.”

The Red Cross Society of China has also joined the rescue operations, providing medical supplies and food assistance to survivors.

Meanwhile, authorities are investigating the cause of the earthquake to prevent similar disasters in the future.

The situation highlights the need for improved disaster preparedness and earthquake-resistant infrastructure in high-risk regions like Tibet.

As search and rescue efforts continue, residents and officials remain focused on saving lives and ensuring safety amid harsh weather conditions.

Authorities are also urging residents to follow safety guidelines and cooperate fully with emergency response teams during recovery operations.
