The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has successfully rescued a four-year-old boy, Hope Evans, who was abducted in Cross River State and relocated to Abuja by 32-year-old Blessing Okoi from Rivers State.
Okoi, a stylist from Akamkpa Local Government Area, admitted to taking the child to convince her former lover that their relationship had produced a child before they broke up in 2021.
The boy’s name was changed to David Evans, further complicating his identity.
According to the Commissioner of Police for FCT, Tunji Disu, Okoi’s actions were motivated by desperation to secure marriage and alleviate personal struggles.
After relocating to Abuja without the consent of the boy’s parents, Okoi was arrested two weeks later, following a report from the child’s mother.
“This is a wake-up call to teachers and caregivers to be extra vigilant,” Disu stated, emphasizing the importance of heightened security during this end-of-year period when criminal activities often increase.
Meanwhile, the police are investigating the role of the man Okoi claimed as her lover, who remains unnamed.
Authorities also highlighted that the situation highlights the need for schools and communities to remain security-conscious and proactive.
“Teachers and caregivers must always prioritize the safety of children under their care. Overlooking small signs can have significant consequences,” added Disu.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in safeguarding children, especially in times of heightened desperation or economic pressure.
