A stunning political scandal has ended with a prison sentence after former Scottish National Party (SNP) chief executive Peter Murrell was jailed for embezzling more than £400,000 from the party.
The development has sparked debate across the United Kingdom, because Murrell held one of the most trusted positions within the SNP for years.
The former party executive was sentenced to five years and three months in prison after admitting to taking party funds over a 12-year period. Moreover, authorities are now moving to recover the missing money through further legal proceedings.
The embezzlement case has quickly become one of the most talked-about political stories in Scotland.
According to court findings, Murrell, 61, admitted to stealing £400,310.65 between 2010 and 2022. Investigators discovered that party funds were allegedly used for luxury purchases and personal spending.
Among the items reportedly bought were vehicles, jewellery, electronics, household products and a luxury motorhome.
During sentencing, Judge Lord Young strongly criticized Murrell’s actions. He described the offences as a “calculated crime of dishonesty.”
The judge further stated that significant efforts had been made to hide the thefts. These efforts reportedly included charge card transactions, bank transfers and false invoices.
Furthermore, the court heard that no clear reason had been identified for the crimes. However, the judge stressed that the sentence should serve as a warning to senior officials entrusted with public or organizational funds.
One of the most shocking discoveries involved a luxury motorhome valued at more than £124,000. Investigators revealed that the purchase had been made entirely with party money.
Meanwhile, authorities uncovered spending on gardening equipment, home appliances, jewellery and other personal items.
The fraud was uncovered during a wider Police Scotland investigation into SNP finances. The probe began after concerns emerged about money raised for a future Scottish independence referendum campaign.
Murrell’s legal team told the court that he had accepted responsibility for his actions. They also said he had expressed remorse for the damage caused to the party.
According to his lawyer, Murrell acknowledged both the financial and emotional impact of the scandal. It was also stated that he had faced public embarrassment and lived largely in isolation since his arrest.
However, Peter Murrell embezzlement case is not yet fully closed. A proceeds-of-crime hearing has been scheduled for September as authorities seek to recover the stolen funds.
