The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed reports alleging the hacking of the Enugu State Government’s official account, resulting in a theft of N1.09 billion.
In a statement issued on Thursday, January 9, the Force spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, described the claims as baseless, false and urged the public to verify news before spreading misinformation.
According to Adejobi, the incident in question was not a cyber breach but a case of procurement fraud, thoroughly investigated by the NPF-National Cyber Crime Centre (NCCC).
He confirmed that a suspect has been arrested and the stolen funds have been recovered.
He emphasized, “There has been no hacking of the Enugu State Government’s account, and the allegations of a theft amounting to N1.09 billion are entirely baseless.”
Furthermore, Adejobi highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the Enugu State Government, various ministries, and the NCCC to establish fortified security protocols safeguarding financial systems.
He further added that these measures ensure the integrity of government accounts and prevent cyber-related incidents.
“The Enugu State Government and other ministries, departments, and agencies of government have established comprehensive security protocols to safeguard their financial systems,” he noted.
The police force cautioned against the spread of false information, stressing that unverified news can mislead the public and harm trust among government institutions.
Therefore, citizens are urged to refrain from engaging in misinformation and to verify news credibility from trusted sources.
In addition, Adejobi concluded, “Misinformation not only disrupts societal peace but can also undermine collaborative efforts aimed at protecting public funds.”
This incident highlights the importance of responsible information-sharing and vigilance in combating both procurement fraud and the circulation of false narratives, which is not palatable.
By addressing the misinformation, the Nigerian police force aims to maintain public trust and ensure accurate reporting on sensitive issues going on in the country.
