The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has overturned the suspension of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Adolphus Wabara, stating that the action taken by the Abia State chapter was unconstitutional.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, criticized the suspension, describing it as “reckless and unconstitutional,” adding that it violated the party’s constitution.
Wabara was suspended after endorsing Governor Alex Otti for a second term, just five months into his administration in October 2023.
According to the NWC, the Abia State chapter lacked the authority to discipline a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC).
Ologunagba clarified, “The NWC categorically dismisses the purported suspension as null and void and of no effect whatsoever, not being consistent with the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).”
He further emphasized that Section 57 (7) of the party’s constitution clearly prohibits state chapters from taking disciplinary action against NEC members.
“The explicit import of Section 57 (7) is that the Abia State Chapter has no powers whatsoever to take any disciplinary action against the Chairman of the Board of Trustees,” he added.

Furthermore, the PDP warned that any actions taken in defiance of the party’s constitution would not be tolerated.
The NWC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring internal stability, stating that it would not hesitate to take necessary steps to preserve the integrity of the party.
“The PDP condemns the purported suspension of Senator Wabara as reckless, unconstitutional, and cautions those behind this act in defiance of the PDP Constitution to retrace their steps,” Ologunagba warned.
He also stressed that adherence to the party’s legal framework is essential for maintaining order within the party’s structure.
The PDP’s stance on Wabara’s suspension highlights the need for balance and adherence to due process within the party.
Ensuring a structured and constitutional approach to disciplinary matters remains crucial in fostering a stable political environment.
